OpenAI Paused the $200 Pro Plan 24 Hours After I Moved To It

OpenAI paused new subscriptions to the $200 Pro plan. 1.4 million views on the announcement. Tibo said demand for GPT-6 Astra is unprecedented and they have pulled every lever they have.
The timing is painful, because yesterday I posted a full breakdown of why I cancelled one of my Claude Max accounts and shifted my daily workload to ChatGPT and Grok.
I told everyone ChatGPT and Grok were hands down the best value for the money right now.
Twenty-four hours later, OpenAI paused the plan I am on.
The Last Seven Days
- arrow_forwardSeptember 3. Astra launches as a restricted preview. Paying subscribers see the announcement and cannot use the model.
- arrow_forwardSeptember 4. Altman says Pro, Enterprise, and Business Premium have access. Plus users are told “I'm hopeful you can use it this weekend but I can't promise.”
- arrow_forwardSeptember 5. OpenAI starts banking one usage reset for every day a subscriber goes without Astra access.
- arrow_forwardSeptember 7. Global usage reset. One developer burns through the entire $200 a month plan in 12 hours.
- arrow_forwardSeptember 10. Pro $200 subscriptions paused entirely.
If you cancel now, you lose it until the pause lifts.
This is the most expensive consumer AI plan on the market, and they had to stop selling it because the infrastructure cannot serve what they shipped.
One Message Per Hour. On a Paid Plan.
The estimated 5-hour message windows:
- arrow_forwardPlus. 5 to 45 messages.
- arrow_forwardPro $100. 25 to 225 messages.
- arrow_forwardPro $200. 100 to 900 messages.
At the low end, Plus users get one message per hour.
On a paid plan.
Why I Moved in the First Place
$1,169 a month across all my subscriptions. 50+ agents running daily. I showed the math on why Claude's API pricing makes it impossible to run a fleet at scale.
$3,000 a day if I used Claude Fable for what I do with subscriptions.
I moved off Claude because they declared war on third-party harnesses and made the API too expensive for fleet operations. I moved to ChatGPT because they let me use my subscription in OpenClaw and Hermes.
And now the model I moved to is straining the infrastructure so hard they stopped taking money for it.
Every Lab, Same Trap, Different Shape
- arrow_forwardAnthropic restricts subscriptions to their own harness.
- arrow_forwardOpenAI lets you use subscriptions anywhere but cannot keep the lights on.
- arrow_forwardMuse charges $50 for a code subscription that locks you into their harness too.
The Information Gap Is the Real Story
I run the largest Claude community in the world at 1.7 million members.
I see screenshots of people with $20,000+ API bills who had zero idea a subscription could do the same work.
The information gap is massive. And every lab is making it worse by changing the rules every two weeks.
A Hostage Situation Dressed Up as a Subscription
I hold two Pro $200 seats right now. Same with Kimi K, they have a waitlist. Same with Ollama Max, who changed all new plans.
I am holding them because if I let go, I cannot get them back.
That's a hostage situation dressed up as a subscription.
Build On What You Control
I am tired of being bent over by every lab in rotation.
Yesterday it was Anthropic. Today it is OpenAI.
Tomorrow it will be whoever ships the next model too big for their own servers.
My DGX Sparks do not pause subscriptions. They do not reset usage. They do not care what harness I use.
Build on what you control. Or keep switching seats on a bus that stops whenever it wants.
