Anthropic Approved Us for Claude Startups, Revoked It a Day Later, Then Reinstated Us

Anthropic approved us for Claude Startups.
A day later, they took it back.
Three days after that, it came through.
Here is the whole ride, with the receipts.
Day 1: The Launch
On October 7, Anthropic launched a startup program at claude.com/programs/startups.
I posted it in our Claude Community that morning.
- 5 Premium Claude Team seats for 12 months
- $1,000 in API credits, good for 6 months
- Bi-weekly office hours with Anthropic's Applied AI team
- Up to $45K in discounts from 30+ partner tools
- Higher API rate limits
Eligibility was simple.
Founded in the last 5 years, or funded in the last 2.
Bootstrapped counted.
You needed a Claude Console account, a company email on your own domain, and a description of what you are building.
That post reached 11,200 people.
We applied.
We got approved.
Day 2: The Email
At 9:52 PM on October 8, this landed in our support inbox.

“We have removed the Claude Startups offer from your account.”
Their reason: they underestimated demand.
The Claude Team and $1,000 credit offers hit capacity much faster than they expected.
Hundreds of thousands of people applied.
So they pulled the offer, ours included, and started re-reviewing every application.
I posted the email that night.
“Just L after L from Anthropic lately.”
The most common reply: how do you launch a free program and not expect the demand?
Hundreds of thousands of applicants. In about a day.
Day 5: It Came Through
On October 11, the offer was back on our account.

- 5 Premium seats at $125 a seat
- $625 a month
- 100% off for 12 months
- Total due today: $0
Plus the $1,000 in API credits.
That is $7,500 in seats and $1,000 in credits.
$8,500 of Claude. $0 due.
What the Ride Taught Me
Free programs fill in hours, not weeks.
Hundreds of thousands of applications showed up before the first day was over.
If you see one that fits your business, apply the day you see it.
A pulled offer is not a no.
Anthropic did not cancel the program.
They re-reviewed it, and we came back through.
If you applied and heard nothing, your application is in that same re-review.
The setback got the attention.
The launch post got 17 reactions.
The “they took it back” post got 99, plus 68 comments.
The win got 8.
Almost six times the reactions for the loss.
People scroll past good news.
They stop for a story with a problem in it.
That is why this post tells all three days, not just the win.
Why Anthropic Is Doing This
Anthropic is not handing out $8,500 of Claude out of charity.
They are betting that the companies who build on Claude now will still be building on Claude in five years.
I said it on day one, and I will say it again.
Take the bet.
The clock is running now.
12 months on the seats.
6 months on the credits.
Time to put them to work.
